ADVENTURES IN POTTY TRAINING
It's official!! We are in the midst of potty training. Crazy, I know since the kid just turned one a month ago. Never in a million years would I think that this would be possible. But, I guess that's par for the course with Arden, isn't it?
A few weeks before Christmas, she started "taking" herself to the bathroom when she needed a diaper change. I kept thinking if she were just a tad bit older I would potty train her. I mean there's no way that a one year old is ready and capable of such things yet, right?
I didn't know. So I did what everybody does these days, and I started searching the internet. I came across how to potty train your baby otherwise known as elimination communication. I was intrigued, but that really trains me, not baby. Finally, I asked my doctor. He said, "go for it". But advised that I approach it casually leaving her in diapers and just introducing her to the "idea".
That's all I needed to hear. I bought the tiniest potty chair I could find and filled the bottom drawer of our bathroom vanity with "potty toys". I was determined to catch her doing....well, er...uh, her "business".
The first day went well. We had one success. The next day went even better. We had three successes one of which was because she sat outside the bathroom staring at me. It was the same look that our dog, Suki would give me when we were in the midst of housebreaking her. Sunday rolled around and I didn't even try.
Then today happened. She had a rough night last night (she has a cold, or teething or she's turning into big foot...your guess is a good as mine), so I wasn't going to even try with her. But she woke up feeling great. So after breakfast we sat. And guess what? Success. We had two more successes before her morning nap. Go us!!
She woke up from her nap totally dry so we sat. And another success. We went into town and ran a few errands. Two hours later we arrived home and she was still dry, so we sat again. Success!!! She laid down for her afternoon nap (I know, this kid sleeps A LOT), but woke up dry. So we sat. It was a no go. She was distracted.
This time it was mommy who got distracted. Evenings have a way of doing that with dinner and feedings and all. But then I noticed her going into the bathroom. She made her way to her little potty. I frantically tried to get her out of her fuzzy, footed pajamas. STUPID PAJAMAS!!! If mommy would've been quicker, we both would have stayed dry.
Will this potty training adventure last? I don't know. All I truly know is our babies know what they need. If we follow their cues, it makes things like bottles, bedtimes and potty training much easier
